Three FAQs about flooring
When you shop for new floors, you'll undoubtedly want something that will be both aesthetically pleasing and functional.
There are many styles and colors, though, which can be a little overwhelming. So here are the answers to three top questions about flooring.
Can I have the same flooring I fell in love with at my neighbor’s home?
That depends. Do you both have similar lifestyles? Will you be installing in the same room as your neighbor, i.e., bedroom, living room, kitchen?
Needs are highly individual. Rooms also have different challenges and priorities. Communicate them to the expert in the flooring store.
Is a heavier carpet always a higher quality?
No. Look at density, meaning how closely together the fibers are tufted. If you bend back a sample card and see a lot of white space, ask why.
Another good determiner for a longer fiber is twisted, meaning how many times fiber is twisted per inch. The higher the number, the less chance of unraveling.
A good density number is 3,000 or above, with four or higher twist numbers. Both are on the label.
How long does installation take?
Ask the professionals at the flooring company because that depends on the flooring type, and any extra work, such as subfloor repair, is required.
Generally, a carpet installation can take a day or less. Floating floors or loose lay are reasonably quick.
Solid hardwood is more involved. It has the traditional tongue and groove/nail down with several coats of stain and finishes.
Be sure to factor in pre-installation processes such as acclimation. There is also preparation, such as possible subfloor restoration and furniture removal, among other things .
